Digital Dentistry and Regrowing Teeth with Stem Cells

One of the exciting innovations that is on the horizon in dentistry is digital dentistry—taking impressions of a patient’s dentition with a scanner and being able to make a tooth from that scan right away. It really is a wonderful time to be a dentist and I love presenting patients with new, excellent options as additional solutions to dental concerns.

At this point in the advancement of the procedure, creating digital impressions would actually take me longer to do than the time it would take me to produce a regular impression. The industry has not quite advanced to the point where it is a worthwhile investment for this practice, but we are right on the cusp of that point in time. Currently you have to put a bulky machine in the patient’s mouth and sometimes use powders in the mouth, which is not something I want to present to patients. Additionally, many laboratories are still not using digital technology to make crowns.

In the future it will be the norm to produce prosthetics with digital impressions and I look forward to that point as an advancement of the field. When we have the ability to actually mill or manufacture the crown right here in our office it will be a great feature to offer patients as one of the many services we provide here in this practice.

The other thing I am quite excited about in the future of dentistry is stem cell applications. We will be able to regrow the missing portion of a tooth that has become a cavity or even regrow a whole tooth. Dentistry has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last several years. It is an exciting time to be a one-stop-shop dental practice and give patients the best possible treatment.
