Dental Implants Can Last a Lifetime

Dr. Lezhansky, a Manhattan and Brooklyn dentist, talks about implants lasting for decades. With proper care, dental implants can even last a lifetime.

We also do not harm any teeth next to the dental implant, and the patient is able to keep those natural teeth which might be healthy and should be preserved. In the old days before dental implants came about, we would have to shave down those adjacent teeth in order to cap them as anchors for a dental bridge.

Previously when patients were missing all of the back teeth in their mouth the only option was a removable denture, because teeth in the back are needed to secure a fixed bridge. Now we can place implants in the back of the mouth, so neither a bridge nor a denture is needed. What is placed in the mouth is fixed in place, like our original teeth.

There is longevity to the benefits of the cost of implants. Long term, a dental implant is not going to decay, and it will never need a root canal treatment or a crown lengthening procedure. Research has indicated that the dental implant could last for 20 to 30 years, but it is also said that really they could last for 100 years.

If the patient is doing a good job with their own hygiene and dental visits, their original implant could last them a lifetime. With a healthy mouth and the absence of periodontal disease there is no reason someone would need to replace an implant.
