What a dental implant actually involves

A single tooth implant is one of the most predictable ways to replace a missing or failing tooth when the teeth on either side of it are healthy. Because the implant isn't attached to those neighboring teeth, they're never ground down the way they would be for a bridge. The implant fuses directly into the jawbone over 3–6 months — a process called osseointegration — and then supports a crown that looks and functions like your natural tooth.

There are three situations we commonly see, and each has its own path:

Tooth needs to come out, not enough bone yet. We extract and graft in the same visit to hold the space, then place the implant 3–6 months later once the graft has matured.

Tooth needs to come out, enough bone already. We extract and place the implant the same day. A small amount of graft material may still go in around the implant, with the permanent crown following in 3–6 months.

Tooth has been missing for a while. This depends entirely on how much bone has remained. If it's shrunk, we graft first. If it hasn't, we can often place the implant right away.
