Invisalign Makes Brushing and Flossing with Braces Easy

Dr. Lezhansky talks explains that the Invisalign orthodontic system prevents cavities because patients remove aligners to brush and floss.

With conventional braces the wires are in the way and prevent normal brushing and flossing. The gums can get inflamed where the patient has not been able to brush and floss effectively. When that happens cavities can form and then restorations are needed after the braces are removed.

Invisalign also produces a quicker result than traditional metal braces. Instead of doing a generalized pushing and pulling of teeth, with Invisalign we are pushing and pulling the teeth in very specific directions only as needed.

With Invisalign the patient comes back in at two-month intervals. The system uses aligners, and we start by giving the patient four aligners that they change every two weeks. The main reason the patient comes back at the two-month mark is for me to track them and make sure they are following the protocol of the system. If they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing with the aligners, then the teeth are not going to move. At their visit we give them a new set of aligners that have been prepared in advance to move the teeth to the next position until the end of treatment when the teeth are properly aligned.

As with any orthodontic treatment, wearing a retainer for years to come—usually at night while sleeping–prevents teeth from moving out of position.
